This is effective with the use of old fashioned paper, as it denotes the 'wanted' image that is known by the public suggesting the band is wanted. The use of musical instruments in the photograph tells us they are a band, along with the stage that becomes effective as it tells us they are performers. The relaxed layed back image is used to make people idolise them and almost create a easy going look. They also use quotes from other people which is original with a verdict with stars above them and information in the quote to promote and advertise their band making it unique and effective. They use their album cover which stands out so it can look recognisable and in bold writing has 'Debut album', which suggets to the audience that if you don't know them, give them a try.

This is an example of a very good poster in design, as it is meant to be this band in the sky, which looks like art and the togerthness of the people promoting what it's about. The fact that some people are bigger than other shows indispensibilty in the group, which we will use as there is a main role in our music video. The different colours of writing and the font tells us that this poster is fairly urban, and is aimed at a youth with bright colours and the poses of the people. Also the design of the dates, logo's and added information are effective and the title 'what's up' seems elliptical and creates an ellipsis, making the reader want to find out.

Editing

Editing seemed very difficult at the start and had a slow start to it, as we didn't know all of the effects and what to use for our video. Once we got in the hang of it it became very interesting. We used clips to go with the beat of our music using the markers and enlargement in final cut pro, we played with the motion and increased and slowed down the speed of our video, we changed clips to black and white played with noise etc. We also cut parts of our music to make it entertaining, e.g 'moonwalk', and we used the diting, the right colour balancing and also posterized clips. With the effects we changed the filters of the effects to make it fit into our video and changed the 'zoom-in zoom-out' to the main sequence of our music video aswell.

Audience feedback

Our audience feedback has been very important, as some people are not great fans of dancing, we had to put trademark dance moves and effects in to entertain as a whole rather than make it personal, for example dance moves such as the 'moonwalk' and 'James brown shuffling' is there clearly to entertain, along with some robotic moves. However dance routines are there for the techincal dance aspects and make it hit the genre of our video. Additionally the audience suggested that some of our shots were poor in quality, so we changed this by making an effect or changin the dance scene. Also we were told by our audience the irrelevant parts of our video that we had changed, as it might seem relevant to us it doesn't mean it is relevant to the audience. We had a pattern of compliments with parts of our video such as the 'moonwalk' and the 'James Brown shuffling' which is where we had drawn our conclusion from. Referring to the Digipak, we had been helped by audience feedback with making our images simple, but yet powerful and make it enjoyable with images of dancing.

Digipak analysis

We use a photograph of the three dancers holding hands looking down, with peaceful and powerful messages through it, showing unity and love. We use this as the inside of our cover. We also use an inside of a cover with a photograph of us with the two females' heads at the bottom and the main dancer in a pose. There is a crown with two baby angels holding a crown above his head, and words around his arm saying love, live and learn. This becomes powerful in the fact that it connotes love and power through the crown, and presents nature and a supernatural feeling of heaven through the two baby angels. Our album cover shows us all dancing and the main dancer on his toes. This is a trademark picture of Michael Jackson that is used. There are also spotlights on the three dancers showing power, presence and indispensibility, and also shows that we are the main part of the song. It helps sell the product as it gives a taste of the genre of the song, and the fact that we are all dancing shows the individuality of our group. As three of us are consistently shown, the audience will be asking who are we and will want to find out.

Challenging forms and conventions of real media products

Our video has been inspired through other videos with originality, either through semantics, performance or it being unique. For example videos such as 'Imagine' by John Lennon were effective through semantics in the video, it was disjuncture that was important in the video as John Lennon was talking about war, and he used his wife Yoko in his video opening curtainsh showing a hidden message. Videos from Prince were inspirational as he is a unique man himself, and dance moves such as splits, his high vocals and his costume was very inspirational. Our video became original through the unique dancing from the main dancer, the diversity of dance routines, the fact that Jackson 5 routines were used, James brown shuffling was used, Michael Jackson moves were used, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly Tap dancing was used, and Ballet being seen in our video. Also the ideas from editing using effects to go with dance moves such as robot, for example changing the motion. The conventions for our music video was suppose to be modern street dance as we are three black people, but the contrast from the main dancer showing diverse dancing created a new theme and made our video original.

Performance

On performing aspects, our video becomes indispensible. As we have done a Michael Jackson video, we had to live up to his expectations of being unique and doing his dance moves. As from Michael Jacksons motown 25 Billie Jean performance, we have been inspred to perform. The trademark of his moonwalk is used in our video as it is for the fans to see and enjoy on Michaels perspective. Shuffling from James Brown was used just before the moonwalk in a silhouette in our video which was effective. Also in the verse, Fred Astaire tap dancing is also used effectively. Dance move from robot, to Michael Jackson dancing, to ballet in the routines are used to enhance our performance. The two girls perform and represented a theme of modern dancing in urban society, as they were inspired by dancing artists such as Ciara, Chris Brown, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce etc. Lip syncing the first verse was also important as Michael Jackson performs his with a unique passion, which makes him the best and most successful in the music industry. The clutch of his mouth was impersonated in this video, along with his hand movements and rolling of the shouder. This passion of lip syncing can be seen in music videos such as 'Bad', 'They don't care about us', 'Smooth criminal' etc.

Narrative

The video starts with close-ups of the three dancers panning to show the competition and act as if it is serious and play a part in warming the audience up for a dance competition. There is then the image of the population with the man in a costume, and people enjoying attention in front of the camera, which then tells the audience that the video is also about joy, also conveying the city life that is hectic and busy. Half-a-second shots are shown of the dancers to also warm the audience up of dancing and getting ready for a battle. Long shots of the dancers stretching additionally plays a part in this. The singer then performs the lyrics, and at the end of the verse shouts 'go with it Jam', which signals the beginning of the dancing, which then the song shows the diversity of dance and passion throughout the song. Dance routines are also shown to tell the audience about the unity that is formed through the three damcers being able to dance. At the end of the video, the shots are then fast, then ends with the main dancer with his arms out, which almost creates a religious symbol (Jesus dying on the cross), which is associated with Michael Jackson, showing power, indispensibilty and the feeling of a king.
As Jackson 5 are known for their singing, performance and dancing, the image of them about to dance has mass relevance to our video as they are able to show they dance through an image. The use of crossed legs, leaning back and leaning forward shows they are dancers even to an audience who doesn't know who they are. Michael Jackson in the middle and still being the smallest shows they are trying to enhance Michael's indispensibility, that he is the smallest and youngest but is still the best. As they are showing all the brothers standing in a line, it shows the brotherhood between the brothers also with their trademark afro's. Showing them with smart clothes on shows the photographs attempts of making them look cute and adorable as this was Michael Jackson's ay of fame at a young age.
This Michael Jackson album cover contains so many messages and symbolises so many secret messages as Michael Jackson sat with the artist who created the album cover. As Michael Jackson is in touch with nature, animals and art this almost defines Michael Jackson as a person. However as he was a victim of the system he was part of the conspiracy theory and shows this through the art in this work, there is a triangular image of the eye on the green wall and an image of a dog sitting on the throne with a crown. This suggests that the country is ruled by dogs and symbolises the world power with the one eye. Also Michael Jackson's love for animals is shown as he has his pet monkey 'Bubbles' wearing a crown above the mask over Michael Jackson's eyes, and there are images of animals around the picture. Also his love for children is shown around the picture as he has naked children and child angels around the picture, showing his love for nature and art.

This famous album cover of the Beatles walking down abbey road comes inspirational in our album cover as it symbolises the unity within the group, and as it is filmed outside their studio, it shows how a simple idea can become a huge successful message, and has become inspirational as the picture connotes four ordinary men, who mean so much to society and their communities as the photo is took on abbey road. Also with the three leading men of the photograph wearing suits by Tommy Nutter, this also connotes the ordinary life they could be living and the ordinary life they were living before their success. With the unique hairstyles of John Lennon and Harrison, it denotes their time period and shows individuality and deviance as an acceptance to society, as they are icons in the media industry so have followers from across the world.

Analysis of music video

We set our music video to be aimed at an audience of youths aged from 15-25 as it is a pop music video. Meanwhile as michael Jackson is followed by much of the older generations as he peaked in the decades of 1980-1990 and 1990-2000, it is also aimed at the people who were around that time. Michael Jackson also never accepted his colour barriers and broke this reaching to an audience of black, white and asian and is a universal figure and icon, so the audience would be even bigger than this for our music video. The genre of the video is pop/R & B video as the composition of drums is very up beat and fast tempo, it is also a dancing song as there are a lot of fast second clips with a diversity of dance moves.

We use natural lighting in our music video apart from when we are in the dance studio, as at times we use the light in the studio. We use natural lighting because we are outside in the street, which adds to the connotations of the video being a street dance theme, with which the costume plays a part in.

The two female dancers of the video have a costume of urban clothes to show it is 'street', meanwhile their costume contrasts to what the main male dancer is wearing which is his shirt tucked into his pants, with gold accessories, which coveys the theme and style of 1950s to 1990s. The male dancer 'shuffles' which is a known dance move from the 1950s from James brown. The main dancer also has a white shirt with the logo of 'Olodum', which Michael Jackson actually wears in the 'They don't care about us' video, which Olodum are a brazilian drummer group who protest for black rights in Brazil, which link to our video of creating a Michael Jackson theme, and hold a form of african pride which all three dancers are apart of. Also the main dancers shiny shoes present the modern version of James Brown and the history of black musics leather black patents or loafers.

The background and surroundings are also of graffiti, typical urban inner-city locations to enhance the theme of 'street dance'. Key props such as busses, population traffic are used to show the city life. Skate ramps are used for the background and tunnels are also used to show the outdoor life of manchester. We also dance on the top of a car park with a good background of big buildings to also portray the city life.

The close-up panning shot of the three dancers at the beginning plays a part in the narrative as the serious faces give a clue that the video is going to be a dance off. Then the low angle shot of the male doing his first dance move shows what the music video will be about with the up-beat music. There is then the long shot of the busy population running around with increased motion, and gives a theme of happiness and joy with the man in the costume, and the quick long shot of people enjoying being infront of the camera. Alot of long-shots and cutaways are used throughout the video as there is three of us dancing. Throught the first verse a long shot is turned into an establishing shot to show the scene around which comes very effective and plays as an original idea. Finally there are extreme close ups of the graffiti near the opening of the video which present urban/skating city life.

DAY 8: FILMING PROCESS

Today we are doing our fourth location on a car park, then will go to our fifth location an hour later, as we are doing lip syncing in both locations. Today will be about performance, we have an original idea with what we will do as a camera shot. Ideas such as tunnels will be used to enhance the performance and amplification of what the song will be about. The costume will outline today's theme and urban lifestyle which blends with the urban location with graffiti and litter, which are shots that will also be used in the video.

DAY 6: FILMING PROCESS

Today we are doing our third location in a dance studio, to use rehearsal as part of our theme in our video, this has been inspired by some of the videos we have seen for example, a dance studio theme from an artist called Cassie. We will be doing some of the same routines for different camera effects, to show a diversity of costume and location in the routine, which is commonly seen in dance music videos.

DAY 4: FILMING PROCESS

Today we are going to the second destination of our locations, we are using some of the same routines from our previous destination, but the freestyle will obviously be different. We are using the same routines because we are using different camera shots, and use the best versions of each routine. We have different costumes for different approaches. The location we are going to today is under another bridge, by a motorway.

DAY 2: FILMING PROCESS

Today we are going to film at a location under a bridge, we have our costume ready, our shot list ready, and have been practicing the dance routine for our video. We have been practicing together for some time before and after college. The roles we play will be two girls dancing against the main dancer which will be the man. Hopefully it will turn out how we predict it to be.

Last day Filming

The last day of filming was on Monday the 18th of November we filmed under a bridge near the Mancunian way , where aaron was lip synching. We went to this location after realizing that we needed a lot more variety of shots and camera work. We filmed there for about an hour and a half, as we had already had a lot of footage from previous filming.

Filming day 2

Our next filming day was on Wednesday the 13th of October, when getting our filming equipment we found that our memory card had gone missing and therefore were given a new one and had to restart our filming at a different location, luckily we had lots of new ideas better than the previous filming and therefore were able to go to our other location which was in Piccadilly were we did quite a lot of filming compared to the first location, as we had previously discuses before proceeding to go filming about our filming techniques, what we wanted to include and how we could improve from our previous filming and came up with better ideas which we used and had a productive filming. Also during the filming if any of us had ideas we wished to share,we would pose the filming get together and see if the ideas will work well with our video. overall this filming day was productive and we filmed for 3 hours and our next filming day will be on Monday the 18th of October at a different location.

Filming day 1

We started filming for our "Jam" video on Monday the 4th of october during our media lesson. We filmed at Aquatics in Manchester for two hours,(although we have other locations we spent more time on our first filming day) We originally wanted to start our filming in the dance studio however the rooms were in use and therefore decided to go to our next location, so that we have lots of different shots which will make it easier for us in editing as we would be able to have enough shots, and therefore we have an advantage of having back-up if certain shots don't work well with our chosen song. We did a lot of performance (dancing) during filming and got a lot different shots in order to have enough shots when editing.

Jam lyrics

Nation To Nation

Must Come Together
Face The Problems
That We See
Then Maybe Somehow We Can Work It Out
I Asked My Neighbor

I Have To Find My Peace 'Cause
No One Seems To Let Me Be

We Must Live Each Day

Lyric Analysis

The Jam lyrics connote ordinary people finding their peace in their own interests and talents, as Michael cries 'Nation to Nation', suggesting ordinary people, and 'I have to find my peace cause no one seems to let me be', suggesting to us that Michael feels he has to dance for stability and sanity. Michael also has political references as he digs at the system of brainwashing and 'rearranging' minds, for example, 'The world keeps changing rearranging minds and thoughts predictions', claiming the system gives the world a perception that life should be almost robotic and not original. Michael then mocks his opinion as he said, 'I told my brothers don't you ask me for no favors i'm conditioned by the system don't you talk to me don't scream and shout', connoting brainwashing with the euphemism 'conditioned'. He also makes defensive remarks of him dancing, that he's found his love in his life and he can't be harmed within this love, for instance, 'I just want you to recognize me in the temple you can't hurt me i've found peace within my life', and also connotes a community of love with the religious reference of 'Temple'. He also tries to promote his belief of confidence in individual talents by crying 'It ain't too much for me to Jam', suggesting to the 'Nation' that he has confidence in what he does, so the nation should aswell

Analysis

The song that we are using in our music video is the Michael Jackson 90s hit Jam, from the 1991 dangerous album. It became universally popular through the music video, as the most famous 'Michael' in music, collaborated with the biggest 'Michael' in sport at the time, which was Michael Jordan the famous basketball player. They both faced each other at their own talents, Jackson teaching Jordan how to dance, which Michael Jordan admitted was rather embarrassing, and Michael Jackson playing basketball against Jordan, which again seemed an unfair match.

The song was about people finding their peace in their own talent, and dancing relieving a natural feeling, as he quotes 'it ain't too much for me to Jam', meaning it isn't too hard for me to dance. Throughout the video he shows two young black boys playing brass instruments, which contrasts stereotypes and connotes people finding their own joy in whatever they do. The video also shows a young white male in urban clothes imitating Michael Jackson's dance moves, also contrasting to what you wouldn't know about this boy if you took a glance at him, which shows the power of talents showing everyone is unique. However the two main talents that were shown was basketball and dancing, but the message being whatever you wish to do you should do. It was also powerful in the sense that Michael Jackson was protecting his innocence in this song as some of the lyrics stated 'I told my brothers don't you ask me for no favours I'm conditioned by the system don't you talk to me don't scream and shout'. This refers to the alienation of the population that's expected, he then quotes 'I have to find my peace coz' no one seems to let me be', which then he refers to his innocence and protests that he is finding his peace to 'Jam'.

The camera work in this video was indispensable, as the shots created the theme and our group noted patterns with the camera shots, there were a lot of low angle shots of Michael which added to the illusion of his dance moves and makes him look like the superior dancer he is, a pattern of tracking shots and panning shots were used and merged with the theme being fast and up beat. Also medium shots, close ups and extreme close ups were used with some of the characters to show specific detail of the props (the brass instruments).
In terms of the mise en scene, the costume of Michael jackson matches Michael Jordan with the orange shirt and orange vest, which also matches with a key prop (the basketball). This creates a colour theme and a colour association, so when people think of the video a colour association of orange comes to mind, which became inspirational in our ideas. Additonally the distinctive white socks of Michael Jackson was important, as it is part of his trade mark and tells us he is dancing. Also Michael Jordan's sporty kit is used as most people picture the basketballer in his kit, so we know it is Michael Jordan. And the lighting is important as it is used on the basketball court, or uses natural lighting. Most of the transitions are cuts as it is an up-beat tempo, also camera shots is used with close ups, extreme close ups and long shots are used for almost a cataphoric reference of what the video is going to be about. With shots of Michael Jordan bouncing a basketball with a silhouette effect. Additionally most of the lip syncing has a close up of Michael Jackson, with a silhouette effect using natural lighting beaming from the window. The motion is played with as either increased, or decreased motion which is effective as a fast beat song.

The making of 'They Don't Care About Us'

This video is a making of a Michael Jackson video: 'They Don't Care About Us'. This video has high relevance to our group as it has high influence on our filming and production of our music video. Michael Jackson reignites theme in his video through costume, lyrics and energy within this video. As this song is about an attack on institutions who are victimising him, he shows his passion through perfomance, and the lyrics with powerful words such as 'allegations', 'trepidation', 'speculation'. These powerful lyrics are used to enhance his passion about his performance which is why he made this song a hit. The contradictory prison costume connotes the freedom of Michael Jackson's life and claims he is being imprisoned, as he states 'black men, black mail, throw a brother in jail', arguing in conspiracy, these institutions underclass black men, and this powerful message is across through the use of the cotume, which is why costumes can play a major part in our video. Also the fact that it shows Michael Jackson perfoming in an ordinary camera shows how our group has to perform, as he shows everybody around him he doesn't get nervous when he perfoms, he keeps his eyes on the camera and he sing with deep meaning and passion. Director Spike lee shows his appreciation for working for Michael Jackson and played a huge part in this video being high in performance, which is something as a group we have taken.

Inspirations and thoughts

We have done a lot of research in terms of knowing the genre of our chosen music by the Legendary Michael Jackson, in addition to all the research and knowledge we know about our chosen music we have put together as a group ideas and thoughts into the reasoning of us choosing a song by Michael Jackson. In our group we have a mixture of races and therefore we believe having our different ideas coming together in achieving a good piece of work. The "Black or white" music video, inspired us in the sense that our group can relate to it. Looking into the ideas we have come up with as a group we have thought outside the box in terms of what to include and were to shoot our video e.g location, style of dance (which we have explained in other posts who has inspired us). Although we have researched into different types of music and dance , we are putting together our own piece to create an original piece. At the moment, we have taken a few styles up to create our dance scenes such as : Hip-Hop, Popping and locking, Salsa, Ballet, Contemporary and also a few movements that Michael Jackson himself has done in previous music videos.

Production Treatment

The music video: The title of the music video will be 'Jam', a Michael Jackson music video from the early nineties.

Duration: The length of the video will be around four minutes long, as there will be a lot of footage due to performance we wish to include in the video as its a vital part of the work we are producing. Also Othe video needs to be long enough to tell it's story and get the message it is trying to put across correctly.

Audience: Our target audience is mainly the youth from the ages 15-25 as it is pop music, also it will be aimed at older Michael Jackson fans from the black background from the ages of 40+ due to the fact that they grew up in the Michael Jackson's era in the 80s, when Michael Jackson was at his peak in the music industry during segregation and racism. However as Michael Jackson almost created his own genre of music, he broke barriers between all races hitting an audience of any race, gender and age who learned to love his music with his exceptionality. So the audience for our video may be broader as his genre of music reached from white American and English fans, to Japanese fans who didn't even have to understand the lyrics.

The title of the music video will be 'Jam', which is a common synonym for dancing, relating to what the video is about. The music video will be about the power of anybody loosing their inhibitions to dance, referring to relieving stress from the populations 9-5 jobs. The lyrics state 'it ain't too much for me to Jam', connoting that you should dance if you hold the feeling, and there is no right way to dance as their are a variety of different styles of dancing. This is shown through the variety of dances that will be shown in the video from ballet, tap dancing, 1950s 'shuffling' and the urban dancing of modern society. Which have been inspired by dancers such as Fred Astaire, James Brown, Gene Kelly, Anna Pavlova etc. The diversity of dance and theme will also be shown through costume, as the females in the video will be dressed in modern urban clothes, inspired by role models in this present decade, contrasting to the dress code of the male, who will have his shirt tucked in to his tight pants, wearing modern shiny shoes representing leather black patents being in fashion from black soul music in the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s. The locations will be diverse, showing working class society of poor housing, and derelict areas (graffiti, litter etc.). Additionally there will be locations of the town centre, showing inhibitions being lost. The story will be about two dancers (girls) dancing, coming across a pedestrian who seems to be looking at these two girls in a patronizing way, which he later then shows that 'it ain't too much' for him to dance, as dancing will be shown together and against each other, underlining the differences in dancing which are merged together.

Recording Days: We have planed to spend approximately four days filming in four different locations, then approximately three to four days with the post-production, then the rest of the time polishing the video, and writing the blog, and we have all come to an agreement with time, considering free time and other commitments. we found out that one of our locations can only be available on Wednesdays morning and therefore can not be used on monday filming. We will spend approximately 2 hours filming during our media lessons and free times during dinner time and weekends when we are all available to meet up.

"Like a Boy"-is R&B music which is sang by female artist Ciara. In our chosen music video song we'll include performance were by we dance. Some of the dance moves you will notice in our video are inspired by Ciara's hip-hop dance background as, we believe that it would go well with our chosen song "Jam" by michael Jackson, due to the fact that it would fit in well into the type of dance by Michael Jackson, as they are in some cases similar in the sense that Ciara in her "Like a Boy" video shows a lot of character and puts her heart in the performance and loves what she does, so that would perfectly add a feeling of energy to our performance in our Final video.

The most significant factor in this video was the way it got the message across which is why it was exceptional. The message that was put across in this video was the fact that nobody is bad, as Michael refers to this with the term 'who's bad'. The message was then reinforced through the acapella at the end of the video on the short film, as Michael Jackson repeated the line 'your doin' it wrong, your doin' it wrong' to the actor Wesley Snipes who told Michael Jackson that he isn't 'bad' because he let a victim get away in a robbery, which was part of the short film. The video reinforced it's message through showing a diverse amount of dances, e.g ballet, body popping, Michael Jackson dancing, break dancing etc. What was inspirational about this video is that Michael Jackson looses his inhibitions as shown by his unique, significant facial expressions, but the ideas from this video that we will take is the diversity of dancing, to get the message of 'Jamming' in our video across.

You Rock My World Idea

'You Rock My World' is another great example which represents the ideas of our video. What our group thought was present in this video was the use of subtitles, as it shows the audience who haven't seen the video before that this video tells a story, and has the same effect as a film, making it eye catching. The quick snaps of the dance moves are very important, and in terms of theme, the video come to life as Michael Jackson has almost universal 'swagger' to him with the significant white socks from the thriller, history and dangerous era in the 1980s and 90s. Also his significant hat which become famous from the Billie Jean live performances, and Chris Tucker starring with Michael made the video lot more eye catching as he is a world famous comedian. As a group we decided that the subtitles idea is an idea we will use and will do this in the editing at post production.

Smooth Criminal is a Michael Jackson video which is very similar to the video we are producing, referring to dancing. This video tells a story and becomes very present with theme as Michael Jackson set it as a 'hot chicago night' from pre 1950s. Michael claimed that before he shot the video, he had an initial idea of doing a country western cowboy theme. This has inspired our group that there can be a diverse amount of themes that can be conveyed through one song. The dancing in this video is vital as the shots create the effect and on some cases create the illusion of some of his robotic moves. There is a lot of quick shots of him dancing and we have noticed a pattern, Michael uses either mid-shots, low angle shots or eye-line shots when he is doing solo dance moves making his dancing more effective. When dancing in a group he uses a long shot to show every dancer dancing to make it look neat, and sometimes his significant hat becomes effective when high angle shots are used, which is shown in the 'smooth criminal lean' in this video. What we have taken from this video in terms of ideas is the story telling, as we plan to tell a story about losing inhibitions of dancing in our video.
